Nina and the Missing Button

Nina pulled on her yellow cardigan. Something was missing. A loose thread hung where the top button should be.

“Gran, my blue button has gone!”

Gran put down her book. “Where did you wear it?”

Nina thought for a moment. She had worn it outside. Then she had sat on the sofa. After that, she had taken it off.

“I’ll look everywhere!” Nina said.

She lifted a cushion and opened a drawer. Soon, the room looked very untidy. There was still no button.

Nina sat beside Gran with a sigh.

“Shall we try one place at a time?” Gran asked.

They started beside the front door. Nina checked her shoes. Gran looked under the small mat. They found a leaf, but no blue button.

Next came the sofa. Nina lifted each cushion carefully. Under the last one, something blue appeared.

“There it is!”

But it was only a crayon. Nina laughed and put it away.

She picked up the cardigan again. A soft tick came from its pocket.

Nina felt inside. Her fingers touched something small and round. Out came the blue button!

“I put it there this morning,” she remembered. “It was loose, and I wanted to keep it safe.”

Gran fetched her sewing box. Nina watched while Gran sewed the button back on. Then Gran put the needle away safely.

Nina tried the cardigan. The button fitted through its hole again.

Before going outside, she returned the cushions to the sofa. She shut the drawer too.

“Is anything else missing?” Gran asked.

Nina checked both pockets. “Just my snack!”

Gran pointed towards the kitchen. A banana was waiting on the table. This time, Nina knew exactly where to look.
